1918
No longer threatened by fighting on two fronts, Germany launched a spring offensive across the Western Front. Although this was initially successful, the Allies were nonetheless able to push back the advance during the summer. By the end of September the situation facing the over-extended, under-supplied German military became hopeless, with mutiny and political upheaval leading to peace overtures.
Hostilities officially ended with the signing of the armistice in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne at 11 am on 11 November 1918.
