Professor Helen Storey and Professor Lucy Orta have more than two decades of creative
arts practice that has broken boundaries and challenged perceptions through a wide range
of socially engaged public and community art projects. Each artist has evolved their highly
collaborative practice from a background in fashion design, addressing the urgent issues of
our time including the climate emergency, migration and global citizenship.
Helen and Lucy will each introduce three of their projects, followed by a conversation and
questions from the audience.

Biographies:
Helen Storey is Professor of Fashion and Science at UAL’s Centre for Sustainable Fashion
based at London College of Fashion. Her work uses the power of fashion, science and
wonder to communicate and act upon some of the most complex issues of our time. During
2019, Helen was the first UNHCR Artist in Residence at the Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan.
Lucy Orta is Professor of Art, Fashion and the Environment at UAL’s Centre for Sustainable
Fashion based at London College of Fashion. Her practice investigates the boundaries
between the body, architecture and environment, exploring their common social factors,
communication and identity. Lucy has exhibited projects globally in the context of food,
water and life, including in Antarctica.
Sandy Black is Professor of Fashion and Textile Design and Technology at UAL’s Centre for
Sustainable Fashion based at London College of Fashion. She publishes widely on fashion,
textiles and sustainability.
