Raül Avilla Royo is an architect and urban designer, and currently a PhD candidate at the Royal College of Art. He undertook studies of architecture in Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC) and in the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio (AAM-USI), after which he completed an an MPhil in the Architectural Association (AA), where he researched on the problem of affordable housing in Barcelona and the roles of administration, dwellers and architects in public housing procurement. He complemented his academic education with professional experience, working for architecture offices, including BAAS in Barcelona, e2a Architekten in Zurich and Beals Lyon in Santiago de Chile. He is an active member of the collective Arquitectos de Cabecera, in Barcelona, an academic proposal that reconsiders the role of architects in housing procurement and city design, and that was awarded with the 2015 City of Barcelona Architecture Award and was exhibited in the Spanish Pavilion in the 2018 Biennale of Venice.
