Contemporary jewellery designer Jake McCombe takes inspiration from mathematical shapes and scientific symbøls to create bold abstract wearable sculptures. He has developed a unique working process derived from his background in metal engineering. Starting with raw materials he initially works with large industrial machinery in a refined way to formulate his ideas and transform drawings into objects. He cuts, heats and forms, then slices up to reinvent the simplest of materials to create surprising outcomes, before construction and finishing each piece by hand using traditional jewellery techniques. Jake studied Jewellery Design at Middlesex university under the tuition of Caroline Broadhead and Pierre Degan among others. He then worked with Jewellery designers Shaun Leane, Lara Bohinc and Scott Willson, where he gained knowledge of the fashion jewellery industry. Jake later launched Jake McCombe Jewellery and continues his ethos of designing through manipulation of materials and understanding their properties. He describes each piece as a minimal sculpture, made to accessorise the human form, both to define and to frame. Jake hopes the wearer will feel empowered by the jewellery and enjoys wearing it as much as he enjoys making it.
