Project Outline:

Thinking through Sound, a series of 4 workshops that including activity, discussion, social engagement , cultural exchange and on day 5 a student-led event.

Sound is a very important part of the Artists life be it the background sound in the studio, the atmosphere setter in a film or the rhythms playing in the Nightclub where we release and create new shapes. Sound and Music is a major part of youth culture and many sub cultures have arisen out of this.

The workshop is as much about socially engaging as it is about sound.

Timetable:

3 day sound workshops –each day split into 2 parts
part 1:10-30 -13-00
part 2: 14-00-17-00 onwards


Day 1
 (Tuesday) Introducing Sound
AM: All participants will be invited to play 3 pieces of music. 2 songs per student  and dialogue around selected tracks
PM: Presentation (video and sound montage) on the timeline of electronic music and original recording  techniques

Day 2 (Wednesday) – The Sound Generation
AM: Leading on from the presentation and the discussion around experimental recording techniques and ideas of generating sound. We will think through and challenge ourselves and ideas on Generating Sound. A challenge will be set for all students to find an object that will be used to generate sound. This will encourage group bonding , conversation and will test creative thinking.
PM:  Record sounds and edit (demonstration of Audio Editor). We will then have a listening session and discussion

Day 3 (Thursday) – Thinking through Sound and Space-you are the Architect

AM: Conduct sound walk (a walk that encourages the listener to focus on sounds in our immediate environment) in Hyde Park and the local environment.
PM: Discussion of findings will also involve drawing and painting to translate some of our sonic experiences and developed into a wall piece for the Sound event. Introducing and opening the dialogue of the student-led sound event we will discuss ideas, the themes in the workshops, reflect on our discussions in groups, to help build relationships between participants and use cognitive skills to realise an exhibition.

Day 4 (Friday) – Thinking through Sound-event

The event will be an all day event with different student led micro events, happenings etc developed by the group- this will include : An eating event: thinking about some of ideas around sound that are proposed in the workshop.

Live performance and talk with Alanna Mcfarlane ( synesthetic, bassoon player , 2nd yr student at RCM)
